Cape Coral is currently grappling with a significant water crisis as the Mid-Hawthorn Aquifer, a primary water source for the region, reaches critically low levels. This situation has led to stringent water restrictions and has highlighted the urgent need for sustainable water management solutions.WGCU PBS & NPR for Southwest Florida+15FOX 4 News Fort Myers WFTX+15Cape Coral+15

Understanding the Crisis

The Mid-Hawthorn Aquifer, located approximately 125 feet underground, supplies water to many private wells in Cape Coral. Due to prolonged drought conditions and increased water demand, the aquifer's levels have dropped to near-record lows. As of April 9, 2025, the water level at the USGS Monitoring Well L-4820 was recorded at -91.68 feet. If levels continue to decline, Phase IV water restrictions will be implemented, prohibiting all lawn irrigation in the affected areas .South Florida Water Management District+2Cape Coral Breeze+2Cape Coral Breeze+2FOX 4 News Fort Myers WFTX+2Cape Coral Breeze+2South Florida Water Management District+2

Impact on Residents

Residents relying on private wells have reported dry wells, reduced water pressure, and the need to drill deeper wells or rely on bottled water. The South Florida Water Management District has already imposed a one-day-a-week watering restriction, and further limitations are anticipated if the situation doesn't improve .WBBHWBBH+4Cape Coral+4Cape Coral Breeze+4
